Impact of Coaches and the Go Johnnies Challenge

In the final push for the Go Johnnies Challenge, please consider the experience you had with teammates, coaches, and mentors. All of the details are below.

My path in athletics can easily be mapped by the quality of coaches and mentors I encountered along the way. Baseball, basketball, and football were the sports I gravitated toward immediately. However, I fell in love with track and field in junior high school. I was fortunate to have great coaches and mentors from those first years as an athlete through my early years as a coach.

Minnewaska Area High School was newly formed with the merging of several small town schools when I arrived in eighth grade. I didn’t know it at the time, but the track and field coaches were new to the sport. Led by head coach Steve Hill, they stepped in to support the athletes and provide a positive atmosphere. Since I started coaching, I have enjoyed reconnecting with the coaches and hearing their stories of needing to learn about the sport as quickly as possible.

The quality of coaching I experienced continued throughout college at Hamline University with Kent Stahly and Paul Schmaedeke. Their drive to learn as a coach and share that knowledge with the athletes provided a blueprint of how we can grow in any career or endeavor. The effort showed a genuine love of the sport and care for their athletes. They provided the structure that challenged us to improve and we built great friendships along the way.

I stayed in the sport because of the impact these coaches had on me, and I hope I can provide that same mentorship to the Johnnies. Please consider donating to the SJU Cross Country and Track and Field teams. Also, reach out to teammates and help us spread the word.
