January Highlights

Johnnie track alumni and fans clearly wanted to get out of the house last weekend. Despite the cold temperature, we had a great turnout for our annual alumni meet. Over 40 alumni competed for the Johnnies and dwarfed some of the college teams there. The social was moved to the J-Club room upstairs and guys hung out for quite awhile. I always enjoy starting the season by seeing everyone again.

A few quick highlights:

  • The first running of the David Forster Mile with twenty alumni competing.

  • Steve Kimble (1999) hops in the 400m dash to prove to his son that he’s still got it. He may have wagered and lost a burrito on his quest to break 60 seconds.

  • Alumni who proved they still got it and placed third in the meet: Gavin Rupp (2022) in the weight throw. Daniel Lauer-Schumacher (2007) was third in the 3k. Finally, Alex Crnkovich (2023) held his own in the triple jump.

  • Battle of the distance runners in the 60 meter dash: Tommy Allen (2024) uses his youthful legs to best teammate Alexei Hensel (2024)

  • Latest entry: Ryan Bromenschenkel (1999) strolls in with vault poles slung over his shoulder and swaggering with confidence as the young guys are warming up. Impressively stays in one piece.

This week, we remain at home for a small meet with Bethel University on Friday evening. Field events start at 4:30pm and running events at 5pm. I can’t guarantee anyone will be running with a giant inflatable lizard as a baton, but it still should be a good time. We’d love to see you back on campus, especially if you couldn’t make it last week.

BTW- Distance runners will be competing at the U of M on February 7th. We have one more indoor home meet on Saturday, February 14th. No better way to celebrate Valentine's Day than with the Johnnies.
